Detox Water: It’s Water, But Better

Take Your Water From Basic to Blooming With Flavor

Living in Florida has it’s pros and cons, but one thing I’ll complain about all the time? It’s HOT. The first thing I’ll crave is a Popsicle or some ice cream, but once I hit middle school I began to realize that I couldn’t just eat ice cream all the time and expect to look the same. All that dairy and sugar would make my skin go crazy, but what was I supposed to do? I’d drink water every once in a while, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of H2O at the time. So, with the help of some internet research, I discovered detox water. Not only did it make my water taste better, but it's also good for you?! Knowing this information made me feel powerful, like I was in on some kind of great secret.

So what is detox water anyway?

Detox water is also known as “fruit infused” water. It’s water that has been infused with flavors from fresh fruits, but it can also contain vegetables or herbs as well. You can probably buy this kind of water, but you could easily make this water in your home for so much less! Plus, it looks pretty cool too.

Making detox water is simple, quick, and fun! It doesn’t cost too much, and over time it could probably save you money instead of buying individual bottles of it every time.

How to Make Detox Water

1. Determine the right container for your drink.

For detox water, a bottle is the best way to go. A bottled with a tight lid will ensure that the content of your drink will stay safe and secure within the bottle. This way you can also shake the bottle to mix the flavors and also move the fruits and veggies to arrange them in a way that looks pleasing to your eyes, which I personally enjoy. This is also why I like putting my detox water in clear bottles, so I can see what is inside. It looks awesome, and it motivates me to keep drinking. It's also smart to keep in mind that the detox water would need to be stored for a while to ensure the flavors infuse, so this would mean choosing a container that is fit for preserving foods.

2. Select your ingredients.

Making any combination of fruits, vegetables, and herbs to make the perfect drink fit for you. Each ingredient has its own individual benefits that can help you out in the long run. For example, oranges have high concentrations of vitamin C, which can boost your immune system. Be sure to research your ingredients to ensure you are receiving the benefits you desire in each drink! However, if you have no preference, and you're only concerned with making your drink taste delicious, then just add things you know you'll like! You can also try something new with recommended recipes. If you enjoy tangy flavors, consider adding some citrus to your water. If you are looking for something refreshing, try adding in some cucumber or mint.

3. Select your water.

Now, for most of you, this part may seem pretty easy. But the avid water drinkers out there know that there is a difference between specific brands of water and tap. Different brands contain different minerals, which can affect the taste as well. In regards to health and safety, your water should have a pH between 6.5-8.5. Tap water should work just fine, but you could always consider different options. Plus, it can make you feel more fancy, which is something I like.

4. Prepare your ingredients.

The first thing you should always do when preparing vegetation like fruits and vegetables is thoroughly wash them with warm water. This way you can get rid of all the pesticides and dirt and ensure that your food is safe for consumption. Some fruits, such as citrus, have bitter peels and rinds that you'll want to get rid of before putting them into your water, or else your water will taste more disappointing than you were hoping for. Be sure to rid all of your foods of all seeds and pits as well. Slice your fruits and veggies into thin sections. If your slices are too thick, your ingredients will have to soak longer, and the flavor will not be as prominent.

5. Add your ingredients to your water.

After making sure your fruits, vegetables, and herbs are fully prepped, you will be ready to add it to your bottle. A general guide to follow is to fill your bottle 1/3 of the way with your ingredients and fill the rest with water. If you are using plants that infuse easier or more quickly, feel free to add less than a third. It's all based on preference, so there is no true "correct" way to make your detox water. After that, you should let your detox water sit for at least an hour to let the flavors settle. If you're using herbs, it would be wise to let it sit for longer. If you are letting it sit for longer than an hour, you should also consider storing it in the fridge for the time being as well.

6. Enjoy!
