Glassware looks sturdy, but a clear drinking glass and a heat-rated food container are not automatically built for the same jobs. Some glass can handle freezing temperatures, some is designed for microwave reheating, and some is best reserved for serving a cold drink at the table.
The safest answer is simple: do not put glass in the freezer or microwave unless the manufacturer identifies that specific item as suitable for the job. Material, shape, thickness, decoration, age, and condition can all affect how a piece responds to temperature.
Quick rule: No label or care instructions? Treat the glass as serving ware. Never assume that a heavy base, thick wall, or familiar shape makes it freezer- or microwave-safe.
Glass expands as it warms and contracts as it cools. Trouble begins when one area changes temperature much faster than another. That uneven movement creates stress inside the piece. If the stress becomes greater than the glass can tolerate, a crack may form or the item may break suddenly. This is called thermal shock.
A few everyday situations can create a sharp temperature difference:
Even a product rated for heating or freezing should be handled according to its care directions. “Microwave-safe” and “freezer-safe” describe different conditions; one label does not necessarily promise the other.

Decorative finishes matter, too. Engraving is different from metallic paint, but neither the shape nor the decoration tells you whether the underlying glass is rated for an appliance. Always follow the care information for the exact product.
If you want an extra-cold drink and your glass is not explicitly freezer-safe, chill the beverage ingredients instead and add ice. It delivers the refreshing result without asking ordinary serving glassware to handle a temperature extreme.

If the original box is gone, check the bottom of the piece and search the manufacturer’s website using the product name or model number. When you cannot identify the item or find reliable instructions, keep it on the countertop and use another container.
Do not do so unless the manufacturer explicitly states that the exact container supports that transition. A rapid cold-to-hot change is a classic thermal-shock risk.
No. Thickness alone is not a safety rating. Glass composition, manufacturing method, shape, condition, and intended use all matter.
Only if that exact pint glass is identified as freezer-safe and the instructions allow freezing liquid in it. Otherwise, use a purpose-made freezer container and pour the thawed or chilled drink into the pint glass for serving.

Not every clear glass is ready for extreme cold or microwave heat. The safest choice is the one backed by clear manufacturer instructions, in good condition, and used without a sudden temperature change. If a piece is unlabeled, decorative, damaged, or difficult to identify, enjoy it as serving glassware and choose a rated container for freezing or reheating.
