Pouring a beer at the proper angle into a clear pint glass

How to Pour the Perfect Pint

A great beer deserves more than a quick splash into any glass. Pouring a pint the right way helps release aroma, keeps carbonation lively, and creates a smooth foam head that makes every sip more enjoyable. The good news is that it only takes a few easy steps to get it right at home.

Start with a Clean Glass

Begin with a clean, dry beer glass. Any leftover soap, oil, or residue can make bubbles disappear too quickly and affect the foam. A proper pint glass also gives your beer room to build a neat head instead of overflowing.

Choose a glass that fits the style of beer you are serving. A classic pub glass is a great everyday choice for lagers, ales, and many craft beers.

Hold the Glass at a 45-Degree Angle

Before you begin pouring, tilt the glass to about a 45-degree angle. This lets the beer travel gently along the inside wall of the glass, helping control the foam during the first part of the pour.

Pour Smoothly Down the Side

Pour in one steady, controlled motion. Whether you are pouring from a can, bottle, or tap, aim the beer toward the inside side of the tilted glass—not straight down into the bottom. This keeps the carbonation from releasing all at once and prevents a glass full of foam.

If you are using a tap, open it fully after the glass is in position. A hesitant, partial flow can create extra foam and make the pour harder to control.

Straighten the Glass Near the End

When the glass is about halfway to two-thirds full, slowly bring it upright. Continue pouring closer to the center of the beer. This final step creates the soft, balanced foam head that completes a well-poured pint.

For most beers, aim for a foam head around one inch. It should look creamy and even—not so large that it takes over the glass, and not so small that the beer looks flat.

Give It a Moment Before Serving

After the pour, let the beer settle briefly. This gives the foam a chance to tighten up and creates a cleaner presentation. Then serve it right away while it is fresh, cold, and ready to enjoy.

Common Pouring Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pouring straight down too soon: This can create too much foam.
  • Using a glass that is not fully clean: Residue can weaken the head and affect flavor.
  • Filling all the way to the rim: Leave room for a comfortable grip and a proper foam cap.
  • Skipping the foam completely: A balanced head helps carry aroma and adds to the experience.

Enjoy the Pour

A perfect pint does not need complicated equipment—just a clean glass, a controlled angle, and a smooth finish. Whether you are relaxing at home, hosting friends, or giving a personalized beer glass as a gift, these simple steps help every pour look and taste its best.
